Moinul Islam (also known as Moinul Rakeeb) is a Lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Comilla University, Cumilla, Bangladesh. His academic and professional interests centre on mass communication, journalism, digital communication, media ecology, political communication, culture, media psychology and the social, economic and psychological effects of media.

Before joining Comilla University, he served as an Editor in the Public Relations Division of the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), where he worked in editorial communication, media strategy, public engagement and communication training. He previously taught Journalism, Communication, Media Studies and Mass Communication at Varendra University and Northern University of Business and Technology, Khulna, where he also served as Acting Chairperson. His professional experience additionally includes newsroom and editorial work at Barta24.com and serving as a Founding Associate Editor of Prachyanews.com.

He is an author and researcher with a growing body of scholarly work. His book 'Globalisation, Cultural Aggression and Media' (Bangla) was published in 2019. He also contributed the chapter “Bangladesh, The Bay of Bengal, and China’s Belt & Road Initiative” to China and the Ports of the Indian Ocean, published by the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), Leiden University, the Netherlands, in 2022. His peer-reviewed research includes studies of social media, mass interaction, the Rohingya refugee crisis, news framing and contemporary Bengali literary culture.

His current research is interdisciplinary and focused on emerging transformations in communication and media. He is trying to develop a new unified model of communication intended to explain and decode the increasingly complex, multidimensional nature of communication in the modern media environment. His broader research interests include digital communication, cultural aggression, de(re)colonisation, AI-related threats and transformations, media ecology, the philosophy of journalism, media psychology, history, geopolitics, propaganda, framing and agenda-setting.

At present, he is investigating the role of digital media in disseminating right-wing (Hindutva, for example) and other popular ideologies, while critically examining Herman and Chomsky’s Propaganda Model in the context of Bangladesh. He is currently preparing a manuscript that deciphers the ideology of the American-Bangladeshi Philosopher Dr Azfar Hossain. He is also researching hegemonic masculinity through social media, focusing on how digital platforms participate in the construction, negotiation and circulation of gendered identities and ideologies. His work further engages with information disorder, disinformation, media literacy and the relationship between media, power, culture, history and public discourse.

At Comilla University, he teaches Mass Communication Theories, Media Policy and Planning, Communication and Presentation Skills, and Language Skills. His teaching emphasises critical thinking, theoretical understanding and the application of classical communication theories to contemporary media phenomena.

He is committed to original and interdisciplinary scholarship and employs methods including content analysis, critical discourse analysis and observation and deep interview. His overarching scholarly objective is to understand media not merely as channels of information, but as powerful environments that shape knowledge, culture, ideology, history, identity and human interaction in an increasingly digital, algorithmic and geopolitically interconnected world.
